Sometimes, in a few rare cases, back pain can happen right at middle of your back along the spine. This middle back pain can be the result of a variety of causes. Unlike lower back pain though, mid back pain is not caused many times due to years of strain and little rest taking a toll on your body and causing general fatigue to the core muscles associated with your back. On the contrary, middle back pain might be very sudden in appearance and could be the result of something that you have been doing recently that has caused discomfort to your back muscles or put them under a lot of strain.
Therefore, it is prudent to sit down and think of what you have been doing in the recent past that could have brought about this pain in the middle of your back. Have you been doing some heavy lifting lately? Or have you had to bend your back a lot more frequently due to some job such as reaching down to repair a leaking kitchen sink? Or have you taken up a rigorous workout routine? In such cases, one or more muscles in your back undergo too much stress thus causing a sharp pain. Though the strained muscle theory is often the most likely explanation, middle back pain may also be caused by a slipped disc or other similar problems. Thankfully, such problems can be easily identified by a simple x-ray so that appropriate treatment is immediately rendered.
Many a times, a strained muscle can be soothed by a massage or a simple ice-pack couples with a lot of rest. That is probably the “first aid” that you should turn to in case you feel a sharp pain in the middle of your back. However, if the pain is serious enough and shows no signs of receding, it is best to visit your doctor for medication or further diagnosis.
Middle back pain can be easily prevented by seeing to it that there are no sources of sudden strain on your back except in cases such as when it is a fallout of a disease such as a bladder infection etc. However, prevention is only possible to a certain extent and if you do get a pain in the mid back region, you should atleast prevent further strain by resting your back muscles. Many doctors suggest lying down on your back with your legs from the knees down elevated at a height (normally by the use of pillows). This position is known to be beneficial to the back and will help in reducing the pain and not aggravating it further.
