Back Pain is a very common complaint among adults and can also be extremely frustrating as it gets in the way of your daily chores and routine activities. One startling estimate points out that over 80% of adults say they have suffered from back pain at some or the other point in their lives. This being the case, it is not surprising to see so many looking for a cure for this sometimes seemingly chronic problem.

Though being extremely prolific, there are many little known, natural and easy cures that can atleast considerably dampen the back pain if not eradicate it completely. However, before getting into the curing part, it is of utmost importance to first make an effort into understanding the type of back pain the patient is suffering from and the probable causes for it.

The back pain could be characterized by sporadic bursts of sudden shooting pain in the back or a consistent throbbing pain that is always there. Sometimes, the pain occurs only when you are engaged in certain tasks or postures such as bending down to pick something up or when lying down on your back. Furthermore, the back pain could be classified based on the actual point where the pain is felt the most which means it could be lower back pain (the most common) or upper back pain or just under your neck etc.

Quite like the symptoms, the causes too could be as varied. It is mostly the causes that decide how serious the condition is. In most cases, back pain is caused by faulty postures or due to working conditions that may require staying seated or standing for long stretches of time. In most cases, these can be remedied by making a conscious effort to improve your postures or by employing simple exercises at regular intervals of time.

However, sometimes back pain might be caused by a sudden jolt to the spine caused by an accident or a sudden impact or sometimes with no apparent reason at all. In such cases, it is best to immediately seek medical advice as it could be due to a variety of reasons and could lead to unnecessary complications if not taken care of immediately.

This website attempts to take you through the many possible types and causes of back pain and how you could combat the problem. Feel free to browse through and take away whatever you might find useful.

Sometimes, in a few rare cases, back pain can happen right at middle of your back along the spine. This middle back pain can be the result of a variety of causes. Unlike lower back pain though, mid back pain is not caused many times due to years of strain and little rest taking a toll on your body and causing general fatigue to the core muscles associated with your back. On the contrary, middle back pain might be very sudden in appearance and could be the result of something that you have been doing recently that has caused discomfort to your back muscles or put them under a lot of strain.

Therefore, it is prudent to sit down and think of what you have been doing in the recent past that could have brought about this pain in the middle of your back. Have you been doing some heavy lifting lately? Or have you had to bend your back a lot more frequently due to some job such as reaching down to repair a leaking kitchen sink? Or have you taken up a rigorous workout routine? In such cases, one or more muscles in your back undergo too much stress thus causing a sharp pain. Though the strained muscle theory is often the most likely explanation, middle back pain may also be caused by a slipped disc or other similar problems. Thankfully, such problems can be easily identified by a simple x-ray so that appropriate treatment is immediately rendered.

Many a times, a strained muscle can be soothed by a massage or a simple ice-pack couples with a lot of rest. That is probably the “first aid” that you should turn to in case you feel a sharp pain in the middle of your back. However, if the pain is serious enough and shows no signs of receding, it is best to visit your doctor for medication or further diagnosis.

Middle back pain can be easily prevented by seeing to it that there are no sources of sudden strain on your back except in cases such as when it is a fallout of a disease such as a bladder infection etc. However, prevention is only possible to a certain extent and if you do get a pain in the mid back region, you should atleast prevent further strain by resting your back muscles. Many doctors suggest lying down on your back with your legs from the knees down elevated at a height (normally by the use of pillows). This position is known to be beneficial to the back and will help in reducing the pain and not aggravating it further.

Upper back pain is surely not as common in its occurrence as lower back pain. However, it is a well known fact that pain in the upper back is often much more excruciating and discomforting than lower back pain. It is for this reason that this kind of back ache needs more careful analyzing and special attention.

The most common cause for upper back pain is wrong postures. Infact, upper back aches were never even present until about a few decades ago. This points to the fact that with the coming up of more jobs that require a person to be seated in only one particular position for long periods of time, the frequency of occurrence of upper back pains has increased. Some other less common causes may include physical injuries to joints, muscles etc. Again these are mainly caused my weakening of the joints owing to a largely sedentary lifestyle over a long period of time. In many cases, especially among women, osteoporosis causes weaking of bones that may also result in severe upper back pain.

Sometimes, an injury or a sudden impact might result in what is known as a vertebral compression fracture. A symptom for such a condition is upper back ache and is mostly treated by specialized surgical procedures such as vertebroplasty in combination with prescriptions for rest and physiotherapy.

As is the case with many forms of back pain, regular exercise is the key to alleviating the suffering and even in preventing upper back pain from occurring. The proper stretching exercises coupled with periods of rest and relaxation can go a long way. A professional therapist or a chiropractor might be a lot of help here in prescribing and demonstrating to you the right exercises that could get you back and up again.

There are also other forms of treatment worth looking into such as acupuncture, deep muscle massages etc. In extreme cases, your doctor might prescribe surgery for you which is usually the last resort in case nothing else works. Whatever be the case, remember not to follow unhealthy practices such as lifting heavy weights, over-exercising or doing absolutely no exercising at all. If you only put in the effort to take care of yourself and even visit a doctor if you feel the need, you can usually prevent mild upper back aches from growing into something more unbearable.

Lower back pain is unarguably the most common form of back pain that occurs in adults. It can get extremely ugly and intrusive if no steps are taken to combat the condition effectively. Simple acts such as bending down to pick up the morning newspaper or just walking to the refrigerator can become a real chore. Most often lower back pain is caused by lifestyle conditions. Busy professionals with a busy work life with very less time for a break or for some simple stretching exercises might find that the effects of years of strain slowly accumulate and show up in the form of a nagging pain in your lower back.

However, the fact is that you cannot simply will the back pain to go away. The best and ultimate way of losing your lower back pain and also preventing it from occurring is to just relax once in a while and lie down flat for a while so that your physical and mental energies are regained. Of course, that wouldn’t be all! For many people, their lifestyle might require them to be remain seated at one place for long periods of time. While avoiding this is inevitable if that is work requires off you, it is best if you can find time for yourself to get up at regular intervals and walk around a bit while just stretching your body out and particularly your back. Not only will this help you physically but you will find that it would considerably freshen you up and improve your mental state which can work wonders for you as well. After all, any physical illness or discomfort is only a combination of both physical and mental strain. Heavier exercises could be attempted too once you find your back pain to be receding. This will help you in general strengthening of your body and will prevent back aches from occurring in the future.

That said, lower back pain could also be serious enough that it cannot be gotten rid off by mere stretching. In such cases, the back pain could most likely have been caused by something more than just improper posturing such as a degenerative disease. It is best to seek professional help if that is the case. However, exercise will help you even then since it will definitely help in general strengthening of your body.

So what exercises are best? Well, immobile biking, simple squats or using a treadmill for just 10 mins a day might go a long way. You could also seek out a physiotherapist to help you with this. Lower back pain might be frustrating and seemingly chronic but with the proper care it can be cured effectively.

The underlying basic cause for back pain is almost always the weakening of the muscles of your back and other associated muscles such as those of the abdomen and the buttocks which could in turn be caused by a variety of factors. Thus, it is only logically right that the best way to combat back pain would be by employing physical exercises tailor-made for strengthening these crucial muscles. Listed below are some exercises for back pain (among a million others!) that have been found, over the years, to be extremely effective.

Bridge - Lie down flat on your back and bend your knee so that a right angle is formed at your knee while keeping the soles of your feet flat on the ground. Next, slowly raise the buttocks off the ground taking care not to allow your abdominal muscles to go loose until your body from your shoulders to your knees is parallel to the ground. Hold the position for five seconds and then release.

Plank - Here, you lie down on your stomach rather than on your back and prop your body up so that your weight is balanced on your elbows and toes only. Hold the position for atleast 10 seconds before you gradually come back to your initial position.

Wall squat - This is pretty similar to the regular squats except that it is done with your back against a wall so that it remains straight. You basically stand erect with your back erect against a wall and your feet atleast a feet away from the wall and spread apart so that each foot is directly below a shoulder. You then bend your knees down so that your erect back slides down while brushing against the wall till a 90 degree angle is formed at the knees. Hold the position for atleast 5 seconds and rise up slowly.

Leg Lifts - Leg lifts help strengthen the quads. This exercise involves first lying down on your back and forming a right angle at your knees. You then lift one of your legs up, while keeping it straight, till it reaches the height of the other knee and hold position for atleast 5 seconds and come back to the initial position before repeating the same for the other leg.

The above need to be repeated for 5 cycles at the least and gradually increase the number depending on how comfortable you are.

These are just a few effective exercises for back pain. It must be borne in mind that over-exercising or exercising when you already have a severe back pain might only put more stress on your back causing aggravation of the pain. It is best to consult a professional chiropractor before embarking on any strict exercising regimen.
